CATHARSIS

ART FOR MENTAL HEALTH

WHY
CATHARSIS?

The name Catharsis was chosen with intention, not merely for its beauty, but for the depth of meaning it carries. It reflects the heart of this movement—a journey of release, renewal and transformation.

Catharsis is not just about expressing emotion; it is about allowing ourselves to fully experience what we have long suppressed. It is the moment when hidden grief finds a voice, when pain is acknowledged rather than buried and when emotions are given the space to exist without judgment.

It is a quiet transformation—turning suffering into insight, silence into expression and endurance into liberation.

Many of us are taught to silence our feelings, to appear strong and to move forward without pause. Yet what we ignore does not disappear—it lingers within us, shaping how we live, emote and connect with others. This movement seeks to change that narrative.

WHY NOW?

One in every seven young people lives with a mental health condition. Yet stigma continues to prevent millions from seeking help. Catharsis was created because awareness alone is no longer enough. We need experiences that move people—not simply information that they forget.

Catharsis creates a space where vulnerability is embraced as strength, where emotional expression becomes a path to clarity and where healing begins through honesty. It reminds us that pain can teach and guide us toward growth and that by facing what we feel, we rediscover our true selves.

OVERVIEW &
PURPOSE

CATHARSIS is more than an event—it is a movement dedicated to transforming the way we understand and talk about mental health. Through the power of music, art, theatre, poetry, photography and other creative expressions, it creates immersive experiences that foster awareness, empathy, acceptance and healing.

At its core, CATHARSIS believes that age is never a barrier to creating meaningful impact. Children and young adults are not just participants; they are advocates, performers, artists and changemakers who use their creativity to challenge stigma, inspire conversations and encourage compassion within their communities.

By bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences, CATHARSIS creates a safe and reflective space where creativity becomes a bridge between lived experiences and collective understanding. It reminds us that every voice matters, every story has the power to inspire and every individual—regardless of age—can contribute to building a more emotionally aware, connected and compassionate society.

REALITY

There is a quiet crisis unfolding around us.

Every day, countless young people stand at the edge - carrying emotions they cannot name, burdens they cannot share and searching for ways to quieten an inner world that often feels overwhelming. Stress that has nowhere to go slowly turns inward. What begins as loneliness, fear, or confusion can, over time, become self-harm, disordered eating, substance use, anxiety, depression or thoughts of ending one’s own life. These are rarely acts of attention; more often, they are attempts at survival.

Our adolescent girls are increasingly hurting in silence, using self-harm and disordered eating as a language for pain that words cannot carry. One in three teenagers has experimented with substances, often searching for temporary relief from emotions that feel too large to hold. Many are quietly navigating questions of identity, sexuality and belonging without safe spaces to explore them. Across the world, suicide claims a life every 40 seconds, while an attempt is made every three seconds. These are sobering statistics - but behind these numbers-is a face, a family, a story waiting to be heard.

Between 45 and 60 percent of school and college-going students report experiencing bullying or being abused.

Depression affects an estimated 3 to 8 percent of children and adolescents.

At the same time, many of our children and young adults are growing up in a world that is more connected than ever, yet increasingly disconnected from themselves. Endless screens, social media, gaming and digital comparison compete for their attention, while genuine human connection grows harder to find.

These are not distant realities. They are our classmates, our neighbours, our children and perhaps even ourselves. The greatest tragedy is not simply that so many are hurting. It is that so many do not know how to tell us they are. And by the time symptoms are identified or recognised, there is a treatment gap that stretches between eight and ten years. Thus, standing at the edge does not have to mean fearing the fall. Sometimes, all it takes is a safe space, an open heart and the courage to share. And then, what once felt like the edge becomes the beginning of flight. This is the quiet power of catharsis.

Together, we believe that age is never a barrier to making a difference. Through mental health advocacy, parenting education, art, music, creativity and community engagement, we hope to inspire families and young people to discover that every voice, every talent and every act of kindness has the power to create a lasting impact.

OUR VISION

We envision a future where conversations about mental health are as natural as conversations about physical health.
Where every child grows up knowing that asking for help is a sign of courage.

Where art becomes a language through which people feel seen, heard, understood and less alone.
Where empathy replaces judgement and communities become places of healing rather than silence.
Catharsis is not intended to end when the exhibition closes. The movement will continue through schools, communities, creative collaborations, annual events and youth-led advocacy, ensuring that every conversation started becomes the beginning of lasting change.

Because when even one person feels seen instead of invisible, understood instead of judged and hopeful instead of alone… Catharsis has already begun.
